Pick your poison You’re not one for acting like you’re having fun You’re too caught up in everything I’m sure, a 2 course meal is all the rage, but what’s more Dessert is just audacity Pain fade away, for another day Won’t you halt your aim? Won’t you halt your aim Pain fade away, for another day Won’t you halt your aim? Won’t you halt your aim Dig deep, you’re still hanging tough Just like the rest of us are You’ll bleed, your hands swell up No more giving up Not til we’re burning up This fire needs fuel, You can’t run for the hills Pain fade away, for another day Won’t you halt your aim? Won’t you halt your aim Pain fade away, for another day Won’t you halt your aim? Won’t you halt your aim Hidden, and turned your head into the sand, Your elation won’t keep at bay You’ve hidden away and turned your head into your hands Your elation won’t keep at bay You’ve hidden away and turned your head into your hands Your elation won’t keep at bay No it won’t keep at bay, It won’t stay the same

You could close the curtains on a brand new winter’s day But the dark clouds will show you something You don’t have to feel so strange When the bills keep piling up When you’re feeling like a hopeless serenade And the blood to your head stops pumping Are you looking for a meter maid? Do you think that this will help you? Pull the pin and run Don’t suffocate on your own Pull the pin and run Don’t suffocate, don’t suffocate Pull the pin and run Snap out of your rut, stop living online Where you’re searching for restrictions now Run out of old luck? You can push it aside It’s hard to not touch, but if you’re living a lie Do you think that it might help to Pull the pin and run? Don’t suffocate on your own Pull the pin and run Don’t suffocate, don’t suffocate Don’t suffocate on your own, don’t suffocate Don’t suffocate on your own, don’t suffocate Don’t suffocate on your own, don’t suffocate Don’t suffocate on your own, don’t suffocate You could close the curtains on a brand new winter’s day But the dark clouds will show you something Are you looking for a meter maid? Do you think that this will help you Pull the pin and run? Pull the pin and run Pull the pin and run Don’t suffocate on your own Pull the pin and run

I get a visit in my sleep sometimes It’s a friend in which I used to know It’s not an easy thing to say goodbye Til the next time it’ll be too long And it’s a different kind of feeling when you lose someone To an event outside of your control When the memories are jaded, there is no silver lining The only thing left to say: Let your head rest Down where you lay Let your head rest Down where you lay You could crawl inside a cardboard box and call it a home It’s a cause for concern, but you’re not alone Out in the flesh eating cold, your body’s feeling weak, you think about the world you hold Don’t let it cave in, this world i’ll give you my wish Let your head rest Down where you lay The heaven’s have found their way But your energy it lives today I can sense you with me Even though you’re up there Like dominoes you floor me Let your head rest Down where you lay The heaven’s have found their way But your energy it lives today Let your head rest Down where you lay Let your head rest Down where you lay

You wouldn’t read about it Cos there’s no real story to tell No one can sleep without him I know now I can’t sleep well But the beast keeps striking From a distance like it has no cause Humbled by lightning Slipping through open Jaws Don’t waste, don’t waste your mind I’ll wait, for you, on my time Don’t waste, don’t waste your mind No I’ll wait, for you, in time. Thinking about your friends But there’s nowhere left to vent You’re thinking about the end But there’s no one left to hold your head Don’t waste, don’t waste your mind I’ll wait, for you, on my time Don’t waste, don’t waste your mind I’ll wait for you in, time

My Stride 04:19
I slept through the action When I woke it dragged me in It’s hard not to get distracted by the cardinal sins Now my shoes are untied I’m feeling weak in the side Like i’m losing my stride Don’t cave in I slipped through the cracks of desire Seeking too much of a good thing Falling through the hardwood floor And down to the basement Where my shoes are untied As if I don’t have a sense of pride I think I’m losing my stride Don’t cave in But there’s a glimmer of hope Even on a slippery slope It won’t all go up in smoke And in that glimmer of hope Even on a slippery slope Won’t all go up in smoke I slept through the action I climbed through the cracks I slept through the action, when I woke I felt within Desire to amend attraction to the cardinal sins Now my shoes are on tight I feel the strength in my spine As if I have a sense of pride I’m regaining my stride

about

A summer spent recording in an inner-suburban Melbourne bedroom has delivered five diverse synth-led songs that traverse themes of independence, grief and learning to live with the consequences of everyday decisions.

It was the sudden passing of a close friend and former bandmate in 2015 that began a cathartic writing process for the Ballarat local.

‘This album is dedicated to Jono. He was one of the most inspiring people to be around and was always totally invested in what he was doing. He was just a lovely person and a total maniac.’

‘Where You Lay’ negotiates the immediacy of grief over swelling synths and the delicate guitar progressions of writing collaborator Tim Palstra.

It’s a different feel on ‘Don’t Waste Your Mind’, with Edan Strachan (the younger of the two brothers) opening the track with a staunch but lilting groove.

Buoyed by lyrics of acceptance and learning to live on without the people you love by your side, the track ends with a fading instrumental grounded in the melodic turns of bassist Max Karklins.

The subject matter shifts entirely though in the EP’s lead single ‘Parking Meter Maid’.

‘The initial inspiration for that track was actually my partner Jules’ experience in racking up parking fines.’

The ensuing financial punch to the gut sparked an equally punchy track that is part self-help advice and part dance floor filler.

Album closer ‘My Stride’ picks up where Meter Maid finishes, hinting at the developing sound of a band that is gaining a reputation as a live act to let loose too.

‘In a way, that opening line 'Pick Your Poison' is what the whole EP is about. It’s something my Dad always used to say and I guess it’s stuck with me. For me it’s about considering the choices I make and learning to deal with the consequences’.

Purr Usual are launching their EP at the Evelyn Hotel on Thursday May 9th with support from Loose Moose and Jade Talbot. Tickets are $10 on the door.
